Mexico has agreed to buy a new batch of Russia’s Mi-17 military transport helicopters from Rosoboronepxport, in order to improve its military capabilities.

The agreement was clinched @ the international arms exhibition FAMEX 2017, which was held in Mexico last month. Russian helicopters are on par with US ones in terms of characteristics, but their price tag and maintenance costs are cheaper.

Mexico has already bought Russia’s Mi-8 and Mi-17 helicopters and Mexican pilots know these vehicles and are able to fly them. The Mexican military also has possible interest in adding the Mi-28NE and Mi-35M to their collection, which were used in Syria and passed with flying colors.

Mexico seeks to provide its own military and economic security amid the country’s attempts to prove to both other states and its own citizens that Mexico is not a vassal of the USA. The border disputes between the Mexican authorities and Washington have also cooled off diplomatic relations between both countries.

On the other hand, Moscow likes to market its products to Latin America and is perfectly capable of doing so. Rosoboronexport was also ready to supply Russian helicopters to Bolivia, Chili and Paraguay. The company plans to open helicopter maintenance centers in Brazil and Peru in 2018.
