Morocco’s foreign minister Nasser Bourita has categorically rejected that his country will host EU asylum centers. “Morocco is generally against all kinds of refugee camps”.
This is part of our migration policy and a national sovereign position. Asylum centers have been proven counterproductive and payments would not change Morocco’s attitude.
According to the UN refugee agency, migrants and asylum seekers crossing the Mediterranean now face an even deadlier journey then they have in the past.
In a report, the UNHCR says that while the number of people arriving in Europe has fallen significantly, the number of deaths has risen sharply.
More than 1,600 people have died trying to reach Europe so far this year. In the central Mediterranean, one person died or went missing for every 18 people (5.55%) who crossed to Europe between January and July 2018.
