The USA Africa Military Command announced that it was pulling out its troops, which were deployed in Libya a few years ago to assist air strikes against forces loyal general Haftar.

The move came in response to the latest escalation of violence in the country, and now the Pentagon says it is too dangerous for American troops to stay on the ground.

Washington played a significant role in turning Libya from a rather stable nation into a chaotic battle zone. There were more bombs launched on Libya then the USA dropped on Nazi Germany during the entire WW II.

Libya remains a fractured land ever since the NATO-backed terrorist uprising killed strongman Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.

While British, Italian and French warplanes did most of the actual bombing, the US contribution was crucial to the invasion effort, with America providing the tools to completely destroy the Arab country.

However, during the so-called Arab Spring, the US ambassador to Libya was captured, tortured, raped and burned to death, after Hillary Clinton decided not to send help for him to escape the war zone in 2010.

The West has seized $150 billion of the Ghadaffi family and never returned to money to Libya.

At the moment there are two main competing governments in Libya, one recognized by the UN and based in the capital Tripoli and another local supported one in the eastern city of Tobruk.

General Khalifa Haftar, a military commander supporting the eastern faction, ordered his troops to launch a liberation operation around Tripoli, citing the presence of “terrorists and extremists” as the reason for the move.

They reportedly took control of some areas around the capital, like the defunct Tripoli International Airport, but so far have not moved towards central areas of the city.

The late Ghaddafi ruled the oil-rich country with a firm hand for decades, navigating the labyrinth of conflicting tribal loyalties and keeping radical groups in check.

His extravagant socialist lifestyle did not stop him from using some of Libya’s oil riches to fund education, health care and other public services, which helped make Libya a country with the highest human development index in Africa.
